Morel tries to find meaning in her life and emotional fulfillment through her bond with Paul, Paul seeks to break free of his mother through developing relationships with other women. The story recounts the coming of age of Paul Morel, the second son of Gertrude Morel and her hard-drinking, working-class husband, Walter Morel, who made his living as a miner. Many of the details of the novel's plot are based on Lawrence's own life and, unlike his subsequent novels, this one is relatively straightforward in its descriptions and action. It was his first successful novel and arguably his most popular. Initially titled "Paul Morel," Sons and Lovers, published in 1913, is D. ![]()

The relationships are what make this book work, and the complex bond between Caroline and James is especially fascinating. Each feels well rounded, and the dialogue is excellent. The other characters, like James and Gaynor, are also wonderful. Nella is a tough lady, but has a softer side that she feels she has to bury, while Eliza is naive yet stubborn. Caroline is a good character, very bright and determined, though not without her flaws. ![]() I like how the plots unfolded and interacted, which they did at a great pace. This was a pretty interesting story structure. And the more she investigates, the more her life starts to collide with the story of the past. When she accidentally finds a clue to the lost apothecary, she becomes fascinated. Meanwhile, in present-day London, a woman named Caroline finds herself alone on her anniversary trip. This encounter is the first event in a rapid sequence that spells trouble for the shop. But when Nella, the owner of the shop, finds her new client to be a twelve-year-old girl named Eliza, things change. There, a secret apothecary shop serves only women, particularly women who, for one reason or another, need poison. ![]() The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner takes place in late eighteenth-century London. ![]() ![]() ![]() The fish and the sea stars are my friends ![]() Look at me, living on an island by the sea Saturday, July 20, 2013Beach Songs, Fingerplays, and Games (Sometimes children don’t want you to ruin their picture.)
