It worked for story purposes, and it worked out in the end, but that was really hard to read. All of that is in her favor.Īt the same time, sometimes I got the uneasy feeling that I was reading torture porn. So despite the heavy negativity (sometimes it seems like nothing EVER goes right in her universe), there's still a sense of goodness and hope. She has a firm grasp of the reality of evil, and she creates both characters willing to close their eyes and compromise with evil and characters with the integrity to stand up against that evil. And she creates moods of suspense and horror like nobody's business. Wordy as she is, and fond of info dumps as she is, she's never boring, and that is a rare gift. I'm truly impressed by the immensity of Novik's vision - this enormous and complicated world with all its moral issues that she created, and the way she pulled so many threads together here, and how everything feels grounded and realistic. I honestly don't know quite what to make of this last installment in the trilogy.
